KMS 7th Graders Come Up Short Against Elgin in Baseball Action

Even though the Kenton Middle School 7th grade baseball team took an early lead and managed eight hits against Elgin Tuesday night, they couldn’t hold it together and eventually lost the game 5-16.

Elgin’s pitchers and defense were able to keep Kenton from scoring with eleven strike outs and walking only three. Kenton’s pitchers of Tim Wilkinson, Sam Taylor and Eli Kauble, on the other hand, struck out nine; but also walked eleven and gave up two errors that allowed sixteen runs. Luke Leffler lead the team at bat with two singles. Ben Sams, Anthony Hunt, Eli Kauble, Hunter Taylor, Seth Leffler and Sam Taylor also had singles.

The game was tight in the first three innings with the score at 2-2 after the bottom of the third. Kenton scored in the first off a ground ball from Kyle Thrush. Thrush was thrown out at first, but scored Anthony Hunt to take the early lead. Elgin went three and out in the first with Wilkinson striking out two and Sam Taylor catching a fly out in right field.

Kenton scored again in the second inning with a bunt from Seth Leffler scoring Ben Sams. Sams earlier got on base with a fly ball to center field. He was advanced to second with a bunt from Hunter Taylor. Elgin was able to tie the score in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice bunt, a passed ball and a single to left field.

Both teams failed to score in the third inning with both grounding out one and striking out two.

In the fourth inning Kenton still had trouble at the plate and went three and out on strikeouts; but Elgin broke it out with three singles and five runs to take the lead 7-2. They continued to add five more runs in the bottom of the fifth with three more singles and a double making the score 12-2.

Kenton managed to add three more runs in the top of the sixth, but it was too little too late as Elgin added another four runs themselves and the game ended after six on the two hour time limit. Elgin is undefeated so far this season in the Marion League. Kenton will have one more opportunity to play them this season before heading into summer Pony League action.

Kenton is scheduled to play Marion Grant on Thursday and then a double header on Saturday with Elgin and River Valley.
