Upper Sandusky Girls Soccer Team Holds Annual Midnight Match
Written by WKTN Staff on August 1, 2019
To have a little fun with the opening day of the OHSAA Fall Sports Season, the USHS girls soccer team held its annual Midnight Match on Wednesday night / Thursday morning (Aug. 1).
This is the sixth year of the tradition, with Blue defeating Yellow (color of glow bands worn by teams), 8-7, with the game winner scored with five seconds remaining!
In the spirit of a midnight game, there were no lights, except for the players’ bands, a glow-in-the-dark soccer ball, and the scoreboard.
This type of game emphasizes player communication in order to play well together.
Goals were scored in the following order (Score – Team – Player):
(0-1) Yellow – Janeli Lopez
(1-1) Blue – Cortni Brown
(1-2) Yellow – Hannah Windau
(2-2) Blue – Mia Norris
(2-3) Yellow – Riley Messersmith
(2-4) Yellow – Hannah Windau
(3-4) Blue – Mia Norris
(4-4) Blue – Amy Frey
(5-4) Blue – Mia Norris
(5-5) Yellow – Riley Messersmith
(5-6) Yellow – Hannah Windau
(5-7) Yellow – Hannah Windau
(6-7) Blue – (Own Goal) Riley Messersmith
(7-7) Blue – Amy Frey
(8-7) Blue – Cortni Brown (0:05 remaining).
In addition to playing at the stroke of the new season last night, the team camped out next to the soccer fields.
