Scam Alert Issued by Hardin County Sheriff’s Office
Written by WKTN Staff on March 14, 2019
The Hardin County Sheriff’s Office has been advised of a likely scam involving a person receiving a social media message from what seems to be a known friend or contact, inquiring if the recipient had been notified or had received money from “Poker and Mega bonus cash funds.”
The sender states that the recipient’s name and photo was observed on a FedEx delivery list when FedEx came to deliver a “$90,000.00 win package” to the message sender. Upon responding “no” to the question, the recipient of the message is encouraged to call a “claiming agent” to “tell him that one of their winners had seen the recipient’s name and picture on their winners list” and was calling to claim their winnings.
There is no evidence that there is any validity to any of the story about winning $90,000 and to call the “claiming agent” would likely only result in having to provide personal information that should not be given by phone, to unknown persons.
As usual, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Beware of such circumstances. Never offer personal information by phone to unknown or unverifiable persons or circumstances.
