Ohio State Executive Vice President and Provost, Dr. Bruce A. McPheron announced his recommendation of a five-year reappointment of Gregory S. Rose, PhD, to serve as dean and director of The Ohio State University at Marion in an email to students, faculty, staff, and campus advisory board members on Tuesday, February 5.
Rose has served as the dean and director of Ohio State Marion since 2004. Rose’s reappointment is subject to approval by the Board of Trustees, and would be effective July 1, 2019, though June 30, 2024.
Rose recently led the development of a new and robust strategic plan for the campus that identifies four focus areas: ensuring student achievement; strengthening academic programs; increasing and embracing diversity and inclusion; and instituting and promoting sustainable practices across campus. The plan has been widely reviewed for feedback and is in the final stages of completion.
According to the release from the provost’s office, Rose’s collaborative approach has brought many successes to the campus during his current term, including the construction of the Science and Engineering Building; the introduction of the 4-year biology degree and engineering coursework; the hiring, retention and promotion of effective faculty and staff; and the reversal of a declining enrollment trend to an increasing enrollment trend.
McPheron also shared that in addition to Rose’s leadership of a thriving regional campus, he represents the campus at the university level and in the Marion community. At the university level, he is active among many councils and committees, serving as a member of the Steering Committee for University Reaccreditation and of the university’s Health Plan Oversight Committee. Along with Dr. Ryan McCall of Marion Technical College, Rose has led an effort to improve the collaborative relationship with Ohio State Marion’s co-located college.
His community leadership has included service on the Board of the United Way of Marion County and the Steering Committee of Creating Healthy Communities.
Dean Rose joined Ohio State’s faculty in 1982. He earned a bachelor’s degree in geography and history, summa cum laude, from Valparaiso University, and a master’s degree and doctorate in geography from Michigan State University.
