The Findlay-Hancock Public Library is partnering with the University of Findlay Newhard Planetarium during the 2019 SummerREAD program ‘A Universe of Stories.’
Taking place May 24 through Aug. 17, the SummerREAD program hosts various events around the Findlay area to educate students grades 1 – 12 on all things outer space. The Newhard Planetarium will be hosting two events for students in grades 4 -12: “Teen Star Talk” from 2 – 3 p.m. on Monday, June 17, and “A Universe of Stories: Constellation Stories from Around the World” from 2 – 3 p.m on Monday, July 8.
In the June event, “Teen Star Talk”, students will learn about constellations in the northern and southern sky. Topics covered include which stars are visible during certain times of the year and what our sun looks like from nearby stars. Questions can be asked during the session.
The July event, “A Universe of Stories”, will educate attendees on how stories were used by ancient people to explain natural phenomena and mark important seasonal or weather events. Students will also explore how stories differ between various cultures, considering factors like customs and geographic locations.
With a theme based on outer space education, a partnership between the library and the university planetarium was a natural collaboration.
“I am very excited about this partnership,” said Steven Wild, Ph.D., Findlay planetarium director. “It creates a different venue for the library to interact with kids while exposing them to science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) based learning.”
The Newhard Planetarium at the University of Findlay offers programming for all ages on topics such as deep space science, chemistry and light, modern space technology and the history of astronomy. Planetarium shows are available for teachers planning field trips, scout groups looking to earn badges, birthday parties, or any sort of social gathering. The space is available on Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Groups must consist of over 10 people to make a reservation. To reserve an available date, contact Steve Wild, Ph.D. at wild@findlay.edu or 419-434-4533.
