UF Hosting Music Bach Concert Series Featuring British Bassist Charles Berthoud

Written by on October 14, 2019

British bassist Charles Berthoud will be performing at the University of Findlay on Friday, Oct. 18 as part of the free, public Music Bach’s Concert Series. His Alumni Memorial Union show will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Berthoud’s exciting and versatile talents include a technique that he is helping to bring to the mainstream. Already being recognized as one of the masters of the two-handed tapping technique, he plays the bass like a piano, accompanying himself with multiple parts. A classically trained pianist and multi-instrumentalist, Berthoud uses contemporary guitar techniques to play astonishingly fast, almost flamenco-like passages.

While an airport baggage handler and physics student in London, he dreamed of coming to America to play like some of his musical idols, such as Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Victor Wooten, and James Jamerson. At the Berklee College of Music in Boston, he was mentored by New England bass impresario, Jim Stinnert. Before graduating with highest honors, he wrote the instructional book, “Two-Handed Tapping” with Stinnert.

Half British, half Finnish, and living in the United States, Berthoud’s international influences are infused into his music. Whether it’s pop/rock/country, Celtic/bluegrass/funk, or progressive folk, his playing transcends genre. His two solo albums, “New Age of Solo Bass” and “Don’t Look Back,” have been characterized as “beautiful and moving.”

The Music Bach’s Concert Series is sponsored and hosted by Student Activities Board, “your source for diverse edutainment.”
