UNOH Receives $10,000 Grant from PPG Foundation

Written by on February 28, 2019

The University of Northwestern Ohio is being presented with a $10,000 grant at 2:30pm on Friday, March 1, 2019 at the UNOH Robotics Lab located at 1391 N Cable Rd. The grant is from the PPG Foundation designated for improvements to the newly renovated Robotics and Automation Lab. Presenting the check will be Jeff Oravitz, PPG vice president, coatings services.

The grant funds will be used to construct a fabrication area in the Robotics and Automation Lab for student training. Equipment needed for the fabrication area include a CNC Plasma Table to metal working tools and a drill press. The fabrication area will enhance student education in the Robotics & Automation Technologies Degree program. Courses that will utilize the space are Automation Mechanical, Fluid Power, and Work Cell.

In Automation Mechanical, students will learn more about custom fabrication by building small components such as robotic boxes, machine projects, and build tooling for robots. In Fluid Power, students will learn to build their own trainers to demonstrate hydraulic and pneumatic operations. In Work Cell, students will learn to fabricate custom parts for their work cell projects. Overall, this area will teach students the importance of space conservation and efficient work flow by properly constructing a network of equipment, robots, and PLC’s in a confined work area.

Since the start of the Robotics & Automation program at UNOH in January 2016, the program has educated more than 170 students and in that time, there have been more than 80 graduates. To accommodate this growth, the robotics building doubled in size over the past year with a nearly 8,000 square foot expansion. This expansion project included renovating one of the existing shops into two more classrooms while the entirety of the new addition was dedicated to new lab and shop space. This addition will allow for instruction of 240 students daily.

PPG and the PPG Foundation aim to bring color and brightness to PPG communities around the world. They invested more than $9 million in 2018, supporting hundreds of community organizations across 28 countries. By investing in educational opportunities, they help grow today’s skilled workforce and develop tomorrow’s innovators in fields related to coatings and manufacturing. Plus, they empower PPG employees to multiply their impact for causes that are important to them by supporting their volunteer efforts and charitable giving. Learn more at www.ppgcommunities.com.
