Trooper Injured in Crash Listed as Critical but Stable

An update on the health of an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper who was critically injured in a fiery crash Thursday morning was released.

 

According to the Patrol, Trooper Jason Phillips is still listed in critical but stable condition.

 

He was flown to OSU Medical Center in Columbus after his cruiser was struck head-on by a vehicle that was travelling the wrong direction on Interstate 71 near Mt. Gilead in Morrow County.

 

The driver of the vehicle travelling in the wrong direction was identified as 36 year old Michael Marchak Jr., of Mansfield. He was taken to MedCentral Hospital in Mansfield and is also in critical but stable condition.

 

Trooper Phillips was dispatched to the area to locate a possible impaired driver. Marchak is believed to be that driver.

 

A good Samaritan who stopped to assist the Trooper Phillips after the accident was treated and released from a Columbus hospital.

 

The crash remains under investigation.
