Three Local Teachers Receive Teacher of the Year Awards

On June 19th at the Plaza Inn of Mount Victory the Quest Federal Credit Union held their annual Hardin County Teacher of the Year Award ceremony.
The award winners were Mr. George Wyndham of Kenton City Schools, Mrs. Mariane Galyk of Ridgemont Local Schools and Mrs. Amy Phelps of Riverdale Local Schools.
In an interview with award winner and Middle School Science and health teacher Mr. Wyndham, he said he has been teaching for 28 years, 20 of which he taught elementary.
His advice for starting teachers is to listen to your kids and find out what makes them like learning.
He also commented that some teachers do not expect kids to have bad days and to better understand students that should be taken into consideration.
Next, award winner and second grade teacher Mrs. Phelps was interviewed. She said that she has been teaching for 21 years all of which have been at Riverdale. And when it comes to advice for new teachers Phelps says they should treat every child as an individual and motivate them to reach their full potential.
When asked why she decided to become a teacher she cited her very own second grade teacher Connie Salucci as her inspiration. Stating that Salucci was very inspiring and always going above and beyond to make her students feel special and to do their best.
When asked for additional comment Phelps said that she is thankful to live in a supportive community, especially one that is supportive of teachers and administrators. She is also thankful for the close knit family at Riverdale. Lastly Phelps wanted to send out a Go Falcons to the Riverdale community.
The last award winner is High School art teacher Mrs. Galyk. Galyk was unable to attend the ceremony but when asked for a comment she said that she will have been teaching for 21 years this coming fall. At 42 she went back to school to get her teaching certificate and along the way of sharing her passion for art with others she has met some fantastic students and staff and is honored to be nominated for the award.
Finally, Mathew Jennings, CEO of Quest Federal Credit Union said that Ed Rogers, was partially responsible for putting this program back together. In the past the program had run for a long time and Ed asked Quest to sponsor it and bring it back in Logan county with hopes of bringing it to Hardin county this year and Wyandot county in the coming years.
