Shawnee School Bus Crash Injures 13 Students

American Township – The Lima Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two vehicle school bus related crash which occurred on Lawnwood Drive near Wendell Avenue.

On February 5th, 2020 at approximately 4:14 P.M., troopers responded to a report of a two vehicle crash involving a Shawnee Local School bus.

A 2007 Bluebird school bus, operated by John Evans, age 69, of Elida, Ohio was traveling eastbound on Wendell Avenue. A 2011 Audi A5, operated by Deborah McFarland, age 62, of Lima, Ohio was stopped facing south on Lawnwood Dr. at the intersection. The school bus made a left turn onto Lawnwood Dr. and failed to turn to the right portion of the roadway, striking McFarland’s vehicle.

The school bus was transporting 30 students, in which 13 students were transported by American Township Fire and EMS to Mercy Health St. Rita’s Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. All other involved parties refused medical treatment.

The drivers of both vehicles were reportedly wearing seat belts.

Drugs or alcohol are not suspected to be a factor, and the crash remains under investigation.
