Operation Lifesaver Launches Rail Safety Campaign

Written by on September 23, 2019

In the United States, a person or vehicle is hit by a train every three hours.

Last year in Ohio, there were 66 accidents and eight fatalities at rail crossings.

To raise awareness about the need for caution near tracks and trains, the rail safety nonprofit organization Operation Lifesaver launched a public safety education campaign, #STOPTrackTragedies.

The campaign coincides with Rail Safety Week, held the last week of September.

How to stay safe:

.Don’t take photos or videos on the tracks. Not only is it dangerous, it’s also illegal.

.Avoid distracted driving. Crossings have lights and gates to warn you of oncoming trains — if you’re distracted, you might not even see them.

.Find the safe way around — trespassing on railroad tracks is the leading cause of rail-related deaths. Whether you’re on bike or on foot, use the provided trails and roads to get across tracks.

.Look and listen. Trains are quieter and faster than you think. Never try to beat a train — you won’t win.

Need help?

If an emergency or problem occurs at a railroad crossing — check for the blue emergency notification sign. Call the phone number listed and give them the crossing number located at the bottom of the sign.
