Local Middle School Students Win $13,500 in Scholarships at Math Challenge

(Marion) Middle school students from eight area schools came to the Marion Campus to test their math prowess in the Annual Math Challenge, hosted by The Ohio State University at Marion and Marion Technical College. The top math students from 265 competitors were awarded a total of $13,500 in scholarships to these colleges this May.
“Mathematics skills can take students to many growing, well-paying careers,” said Dr. Ryan McCall, President of MTC. “These students have a bright future! We are proud to help them get to next!”
SCHOLARSHIPS
First place winners in each grade received $1,000 scholarship to both institutions. Second place winners in each grade earned a $750 scholarship from both colleges. 3rd place winners in each grade earned $500 scholarships from both MTC and OSU.
6th Grade:
1st Place…Miles Hall, North Union Middle School
2nd Place…Lathan McCants, Pleasant Middle School
3rd Place…Troy Harvey, North Union Middle School
7th Grade:
1st Place…Audrey Simon, Grant Middle School
2nd Place…Gavin Craft, North Union Middle School
3rd Place…Katharine McFarland, Highland Middle School
8th Grade:
1st Place…Isaac Dillon, Elgin Middle School
2nd Place…Benjamin Dunham, Pleasant Middle School
3rd Place…Luke Waldo, Elgin Middle School
TEAM WINNERS:
These include the top scorers from each school from all grades. They received individual medals and the school received a trophy.
1st Place: North Union Middle School
Team members include: Gavin Craft, 7th grade; Anna Crusey, 7th grade; Kylie Chenault, 7th grade; Savannah Queen, 7th grade; Abigail Zimmerman, 7th grade; and Samantha Girton, 7th grade.
2nd Place: Pleasant Middle School
Team members include: Benjamin Dunham, 8th grade; Jonah Bowdle, 8th grade; Hannah Marvich, 8th grade; Emily Seckel, 8th grade; Lathan McCants, 6th grade; and Makenna Ambrose, 8th grade.
3rd Place: Grant Middle School
Team members include: Audrey Simon, 7th grade; Kaitlynn Sutherland, 8th grade; Mariah Toombs, 8th grade; Adrian Shipley, 8th grade; Jayde Pineda, 8th grade; and Camden Boster, 7th grade.
“Mathematics is an essential base for high demand professions in science, engineering, computers, and data analysis,” said Ohio State Marion Dean and Director, Gregory S. Rose. “Congratulations on taking on the challenge of excelling in mathematics. This will serve you well in the future.”
In addition to congratulating the participants and the winners, MTC and OSUM would like to thank area businesses for their donations supporting the Math Challenge on May 3:

Committee members who work organize the event, write the test, calculate the winners, prepare practice tests, and assign rooms include: David Gorenflo, Tech Prep Consultant for Marion Technical College; John Maharry, Associate Professor of Mathematics of The Ohio State Marion; Tyler Maley, Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Marion Technical College; Brian McEnnis, Professor of Mathematics Emeritus at The Ohio State University at Marion; and Sally O’Connor, Adjunct Faculty of Marion Technical College.
