(UPDATE) Kenton Walmart Remains Closed Today Following Fire on Monday

Written by on May 7, 2019

Kenton’s Walmart is closed today due to a fire Monday evening that started in the women’s clothing section of the store.

According to information from the Kenton Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched around 6:50 Monday evening and upon arrival, smoke was visible coming from the market side entrance of the building.

The sprinkler system in the store was activated which prevented the fire from spreading.

Employees reported hearing an explosion, and the Allen County Bomb Squad and Hardin County Fire Investigation Team were called in to investigate.

At this point, the fire department is only saying that there was some type of explosion, and the incident remains under investigation.

Authorities are looking for a suspect who may have been involved in setting the fire.

According to Kenton Police Chief Dennis Musser, the store’s surveillance camera captured a person who is said to have placed items in a cart and set it on fire.

Chief Musser said not only is video from Walmart being looked at, video from security cameras at businesses around the area are being examined. He said that includes the gas station and banks.

The Chief would not release any more details other than to say the incident is under investigation with the assistance of the FBI and Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification.

While the fire was contained, smoke and water damage could be substantial. The store is closed at least through today while store personnel assess the situation.

BKP Ambulance was on site, and one person was checked at the scene. Other than that there were no injuries.

The Forest Fire Department provided mutual assistance.

Firefighters and investigators were on the scene until around two this morning.
