The Kenton Tennis team fell 1-4 to Elida Monday night in their Western Buckeye League opener.

Despite the overall match loss, Kenton was very close in all of their matches tonight.

Receiving the only win for Kenton was first singles Mykaela Schriber who defeated Ava Long 6-0,6-0.

Kenton’s second singles Lily Osborn fell to Elida’s Maggie Little 6-4,6-2.

Kenton’s third singles of Grace Collins lost a close match to Elida’s Rylie Mick.

In the first set Grace was able to win the set 6-2, but lost the second set in a tiebreak 6-7(3-7). Grace and Rylie played a third set super tiebreaker in which Grace lost to Rylie 8-12.

“I was very impressed with Grace tonight. She held her own to win the first set, and was up in the second set, but she started to feel fatigued and lost some confidence towards the end of the second set. She was able to play smart pushing her opponent back with deep shots and then hitting a short ball to her opponent. Grace’s game has really come along the past four matches and we are excited to see her game continue to improve,” said Coach Katie Isenbarger.

In doubles play, first doubles of Kayce Sherman and Samantha Lowe from Kenton lost to Elida’s McKenzie Sairel and Keighley Eideholt 6-2, 6-4.

Kenton’s second doubles Abbey Anglemyer and Aaliyah Rogers were topped 6-4, 6-2 by Elida’s McKenna Shellhouse and Alayna Mack.

“We were up in second doubles tonight but they lost some confidence as Elida began to play smarter tennis. But they improved and it was exciting to see. Overall, the girls played better tonight but we still have work and area’s to improve on. I was happy to see Mykaela play her game tonight and earn her first WBL win. Lily also played well and is beginning to improve her game and being confident in her strokes. We have three more matches this week and look to get better each night.”

Kenton hosts Fostoria on Tuesday.
