Kenton Girls Tennis Team Drops Opening Match Against Upper Sandusky

The Kenton High School Girls Tennis team lost to Upper Sandusky in their opening match Wednesday night.

Receiving the only win for Kenton Wednesday night was first singles Mykaela Schriber who topped Mara Smalley 6-0, 6-3.

“Mykaela played well tonight and is really getting good direction on her ball. She had to mentally refocus the second set when Mara started to win some games, but it was a good match for her.”

Second Singles Lily Osborn of Kenton fell to Upper’s Saki Fukuta 6-1, 6-0.

Newcomer and sophomore Grace Collins played third singles and was bested by Lauren Schoenberger 6-0, 6-4.

First doubles for Kenton of Kayce Sherman and Samantha Lowe lost a close match to Upper’s Sarah Scott and Hannah Frey 7-5, 6-1.
Kenton’s second doubles of Aaliyah Rogers and Angel Chen lost 6-1, 6-1 to Miriam Gutierrez and Jada Manns of Upper Sandusky.

“We played our first match tonight of the season, and we saw a lot of nerves across the board,” said Kenton’s head coach Katie Isenbarger.

“Through the nerves though the girls had many close games back and forth at deuce which you cannot see in the overall score. I believe we could have possibly had different results if this wasn’t our first match but there is always one every season. We have many new players and they are learning what it is like to play tennis against other opponents. We are looking forward to the girls becoming more comfortable on the court in match play and continuing to get better every match.”

Kenton hosts Bluffton on Thursday.
