Joan Cannon, 91, of Kenton passed away on February 22, 2019. There will be no visitation. Funeral services will be conducted at Price – McElroy Funeral Home on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Gregg King officiating. Burial will follow in Dunkirk Cemetery.
Joan was born on February 20, 1928 in Hardin County, Ohio to Irvin and Evelyn (Beach) King. On December 14, 1947, she married Frank Avery Cannon, who passed away in 2009. They had two daughters: Rebecca (Gene) Wells of Kenton, and Diane Cannon, who passed away in 2011. Also surviving are two granddaughters: Shannon (Brian) Balser of Dublin and Amanda (Drew) Crum of Kenton. Joan had four great-grandchildren: Tyler and Walter Balser of Dublin, and Londyn and Sydney Crum of Kenton.
Joan was proceeded in death by one brother, Carroll (Eris) King, and one sister, Isabel (Harold) Croy. She is survived by one sister, Martha (Wilbur) Stump of Dunkirk. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.
Joan graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1946 and was very proud to have been a drum major for the marching band. She worked at the Sears catalog store in Kenton for many years, and enjoyed chatting with customers. She was also an active member of the First Christian Church of Kenton for many years, participating in activities and holding offices with the Hands of Service Circle and the Christian Women’s Fellowship. Joan also sang in the church choir and was a member of the church bell choir, activities that she enjoyed with her granddaughters.
In September of 1958, Joan and Frank worked with other local parents to start the School for Retarded Children, which is now known as Simon Kenton School in Kenton. Joan served as president and secretary of the parents’ group, as well as the secretary of the 169 Board. They wanted their youngest daughter to have educational and life opportunities that were not available to special education children in Kenton at the time.
Joan was a wonderful wife, mother, grandma, and GiGi. She loved and lived for her family and attended all activities that Rebecca, Diane, Shannon, and Amanda participated in. She loved her great-grandchildren and could not wait to see what they were going to do or say next. They brought much joy into her life. The family will always love her “a bushel and a peck, and a hug around the neck.”
