The Hardin County Sheriff’s Office is advising citizens to be aware of a scam that is taking place.

A man identifying himself as “Detective McCoy” from the “Sex Offender Unit” has been making calls to area residents.

He does not state what agency he represents, however he claims that the recipient of the call is in violation of his/her registration requirements and tries to pressure them into “paying the fine” over the phone, and then supposedly sets an appointment with the Sheriff’s Office to re-register them.

The number from which the call originates is 419-884-5035 – which is a Mansfield, Ohio number.

It is an IP generated number so, it’s possible that it will change frequently.

This scam has been reported in other parts of the country.

Contact the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division at 419-673-1268 extension 1403 if you should receive such a call.
