Hardin County B.P.W. Releases Minutes of August Meeting

On August 3 the Hardin County Business & Professional Women’s Club met at the Plaza Inn at 5:30 pm for a dinner meeting. Following the delicious dinner, a short meeting was held to review updates to the five active members since there has not been a meeting for a long time due to COVID-19.
Treasurer Connie Dietz presented her report which was filed for audit. Pin fines and donation were accepted. She gave her recommendations for one or two scholarships as possible according to the club’s checking balance. After some discussion, members voted to give a $500 and a $250 scholarship.
Scholarship Co-Chairs Vanessa Brim and Connie Dietz presented applications that were received by the July 31 deadline.
The members made the decision to award two scholarships after much discussion.

The $500 scholarship was awarded to Ellie Miller, daughter of Ryan and Robin Miller of Kenton. She is In her third year majoring in Middle Childhood Education at Ohio Northern University.

The $250 scholarship was awarded to Adeline Moore, daughter of Matthew and Danielle Moore of Forest. She is a college freshman, but with extra earned hours through College Credit Plus, and she is on the fast track to graduate early from Franklin University for Library Science.
Vanessa Brim will contact the awardees and send their checks soon.
Director Sandy Moore of the Helen Mabrey Shoe Fund gave a report of the fund. The report started back in November of 2019 as meetings have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In November of 2019, donations were received from Ridgeway United Methodist Church, Lambda OCCL, Silver Star Circle, Walnut Grove Church Missions, and Hardin Co. Pomona Grange. In December of 2019, donations were received from Mary Fay, Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Minerva Club, and First Baptist
Women’s Missionary Society. Thank you notes have been sent to all who have donated. The summary of 2019 was given with 235 pairs of shoes that the fund paid for to give free shoes to needy students.
There were 115 applicants and some carry-over from the past. Three applicants were denied as a few had received from Job and Family Services. The awarding of $5,000 from the Hardin Co. Community Foundation was to be sent to her as the usual Community Foundation meeting was cancelled due to the virus.
The Helen Mabrey Shoe Fund continued reporting of donations for 2020. The following have donated:
January was Elks Ladies Card Club, Bill & Cindy Mabrey, Salem United Church of Christ Women’s Guild, Blanchard River Church of Christ, Silvercreek United Methodist Church Women, and Bridgeport Church
February was Jayma Davis
April was Penni Smith and Hardin Co. Community Foundation
June was Penni Smith
July was Belle Center United Presbyterian Church and Penni Smith

As of this meeting, 9 pairs of shoes have been bought for 2020. Applications are being received to get ready for this 20-21 school year. These can be found with Deanna Wages at Helping Hands or write to request an application from the Helen Mabrey Shoe Fund, PO Box 505, Kenton, OH 43326. Moore will review and send acceptance letters to be used ONLY at Kenton’s Shoe Sensation. With the problems of job loss resulting from this pandemic, there is a chance of increased applications. All applicants are
reminded to write or type the information neatly so that the acceptance letter can be sent quickly.
Although it has been a long time since our 2019 Christmas Sock & Slipper tree/train, a report has not been officially given to the public. BPW thanks the Huntington Bank and Kenton Home Savings and Loan for giving us a place to gather these items that mean so much to students. Just having nice clean socks can help with peer pressure and give an ego boost. Helping Hands helped to distribute the socks and slippers, etc. to needy students.
The following were donated: 423 pairs of socks, 4 caps, 36 pairs slippers/slipper socks, 9 pairs of gloves, 2 pairs of mittens, 4 pairs of boxer briefs, and 1 Christmas gift bag.
Committee Chairman Norma Frederick thanks BPW members, Kenton-Hardin Co. Soroptimists, Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Intl. of Hardin/ Wyandot Counties, and Hardin Co. Retired Teachers plus the community who did donate to the cause. We will only hope that it will be possible to continue this starting in November.
Since COVID-19 is still presenting scheduling problems, a tentative meeting at the Plaza Inn was noted for Wednesday, September 23. It will be at 5:30 pm. Details will be decided later.
Guests are always welcome at any meeting.
