Habitat for Humanity of Findlay Looking to Begin Construction Project

Written by on June 24, 2019

Habitat for Humanity of Findlay/Hancock County is excited to announce it will begin construction this month on its 100th Critical Home Repair, a program that has served families since 2013.

Volunteers are needed to join the excitement and help repair the Alexander family’s floor. Marlene Alexander, 77, has lived in the same mobile home for more than 30 years.

Over time, the floors have become warped and “soft,” which presents a hazard when Marlene uses assistance to walk, and could result in her or a guest falling through the floor. The compromised floor is also negatively affecting her ability to heat and cool her home.

Repairing the floor will give Marlene the sturdy foundation she needs to continue to age in place.

The Alexander family repair will take place from June 25-28. Four volunteers per shift are needed to supplement GSW Manufacturing’s volunteer crews; GSW is also generously providing funding for this project.

Shifts will be from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m., and from 1-5 p.m. Food will be provided.

The Critical Home Repair program provides support for low-income homeowners who need repairs such as heating, plumbing, or electrical. The project maintains the fabric of the community by preventing homelessness and by preserving aging homes that are repairable. It also strengthens the community by keeping families safely in the familiarity of their own homes, and by decreasing the number of blighted structures, condemnations and demolitions.

Habitat hopes to serve 25 families annually at an annual program cost of $50,000. It seeks donations and contributions to fund the materials for the repairs, and utilizes volunteer labor to do the work where licensed contractors are not required.
