Former Hardin County Commissioner Passed Away

Funeral services for Daniel Floyd Bushong, 88 of Alger, will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at The St. John’s Evangelical Church of Kenton with Rev. Dr. Randall Forester officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview McDonald Cemetery. Friends and family may visit from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Monday, August 24, 2020 at The Price-McElroy Funeral Home in Kenton.

Daniel passed away at 10:10 A.M. on Thursday, August 20, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Hardin County to the late Floyd and Dorena (Boecher) Bushong on September 10, 1931. Dan married Maxine L. Dughman on October 2, 1954 and she died on August 13, 1970. On June 20, 1971 he married Shirley Stober Hastings and they would have celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2021.

He is survived by his wife Shirley; two daughters: Debra Sue Sterrett of McComb; Sheryl L. Hastings (David Parker) of Alger. A stepson, Shawn Hastings of Dunkirk. Four Grandchildren: Steven R. Sterrett II, Stephanie M. Sterrett, Gavin Daniel Parker and Kayor David (Heather) Parker; a great-granddaughter, Angel Christine Sterrett. One sister, Virgina (Harold) Ritzler of Kannapolis, N.C., plus numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel F. Bushong Jr., six sisters: Alice Marie (Marion) Willeke, Louella Mae Bushong, Helen (Wilbur) Laubis, Dorothy (A. Dean) Reed, Emily J. (Donald “Doc”) Comstock, Rosemary (Kenneth) Shawver; three brothers: Dale (Idella) Bushong, Calvin (Doris Kathleen) Bushong, and Nelson R. Bushong.

Dan graduated from McGuffey High School, class of 1949. He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Church of Kenton, and a past church council President; member of Kenton Elks #157; member and past President of the Hardin Co. Farm Bureau; served from 1986 to Jan. 1, 1995 as a Board Director of the Upper Scioto Conservancy District; served on the Upper Scioto Valley School Board from Jan.1, 1978 to Jan. 1, 1986, and served as a past President. He had served from 1978 as a member of the Ohio Northern University former Teachers Education Advisory Committee, past member of the Sullivan-Johnson Museum Advisory Board; past member of JTPA Board; past member of the Regional Planning Commission; former Board member of Hardin County Red Cross and served as President in 2011. Dan was a 50 plus year member of McDonald Grange.

He served on the Hardin County Council on Aging Board and was a past President. He was presently a member of the Ohio and Hardin County #34 Chapter Public Employee Retirees Inc., and a past member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War of 1861-1865.
Dan was a life-long farmer. He was very proud that he had been in all 50 states of the U.S.A. and also had traveled to the British Isles. Dan and his wife, Shirley were honored in 2013 as Senior Citizens of the year by the Hardin Co. Council on Aging. He and his wife wintered for 15 years at Lady Lake, Florida and attended the Weirsdale Presbyterian Church

Dan was a Hardin County Commissioner for 8 years, serving from Jan. 1, 1995 through Dec. 31, 2002; and was President of the Board in 1996 and 2000.
