On August 23rd, 2019, Blackbear released a new single titled, “hot girl bummer.”
He teased this single in late July and shared the release date on August 13th. As a result of building anticipation, he accumulated over 1.5 million streams on the single in just one day. On the day of the release, he also dropped a music video that you can check out here.
He was accused by Megan Thee Stallion fans that he was gentrifying the slogan and stealing from Black culture in the replies. He defended himself by tweeting, “this song is not a parody & has nothing to do with the other song.. it has to do w the caption trend #hotgirlsummer #hotgirlbummer.” This tweet has since been deleted, implying that the controversy is behind him.
