Allen County Sheriff Escapes Injury After Being Hit by Bullet from Celebratory Gunfire

Allen County Sheriff Matthew Treglia escaped injury after being hit by a bullet from celebratory gunshots being fired into the air in Lima at just after midnight on New Year’s Day.

The sheriff was a passenger in a cruiser with another member of the sheriff’s office in the 100 block of South Main Street across from the Civic Center.

A stray bullet ricocheted off a Lima police cruiser and passed through the open driver’s window of the sheriff’s cruiser inches in front of the driver, and it struck Sheriff Treglia in the chest.

There were no injuries and it is assumed that this was an unintentional consequence of bullets being fired into the air.

The sheriff’s office reminded residents that shooting any type of gun into the air is extremely dangerous and illegal.
